THE STAR PATCHWORK BLANKET: B.Yellowtail x Faherty

"This design was inspired by the "lone star quilt". The tradition of giving the gift of a Star quilt dates back to the late 1800s–early 1900s and is an icon in many tribal communities in the Northern Plains region. A part of my tribal customs for the Northern Cheyenne and the Crow a quilt is given to express and honor our loved ones. For births, marriages, graduations, momentous celebrations and even in death, Star Quilts are used to recognize our loved ones during life's biggest moments and to wrap the individual in honor and love.

Receiving a handmade star quilt in our cultural doings is a physical symbol that will be cherished for a lifetime. 

To me, the symbology of the star quilt reminds me of our ancestors and that their love wraps around us and extends through every phase of life's great circle."
